What is kundli matching?

Kundli matching (kundli milan, ashtakoota or guna milan) compares the two Moons at birth on eight counts, the kootas. Each koota carries its own points, from one for varna to eight for nadi: thirty-six in all.

Together they weigh temperament, the pull between two people, the fortune each brings the other, the meeting of minds, the welfare of the household, and children. The commentaries on Muhurta Chintamani ask for at least eighteen points, and name the faults a pair can carry, with the exceptions that cancel them.

B. V. Raman warns against judging a match on its points alone: the two charts come first. That is where your Compatibility reading starts.

Compatibility

What your reading adds

  • What each koota means for the two of you
  • The doshas, and the exceptions the classical texts allow
  • Mangal dosha, checked for both of you
  • Each chart read on its own, as well as together

Questions

What is a good guna score?

The commentaries on Muhurta Chintamani ask for at least 18 of 36, and say the higher the better. The score is never read alone: the doshas, their exceptions and both charts all count.

Why does it ask for the groom first?

Muhurta Chintamani counts some kootas from one person to the other, so the order changes the score. The tool counts as the text does.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. It is all worked out on your device, and nothing you type leaves it.
