Birth chart and rising sign
Your rising sign, and your chart drawn the North Indian way.
Your rising sign, the lagna, is the sign that was rising in the east at the moment you were born. Your chart is built from it.
You need: Your date, time and place of birth.
What is a rising sign?
Your birth chart is your janam kundli. Your rising sign, the lagna, is the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. All twelve signs rise in the course of a day, about two hours each, which is why a chart needs your birth time.
The lagna is the first house of your chart, and the other eleven follow it in order. Where each planet falls among them is what a chart reading reads. The chart here is drawn the North Indian way: the houses stay in place, and the signs move through them.
Positions are sidereal, with the Lahiri ayanamsha, as Geeta’s readings use.
Birth chart reading
What your reading adds
- What each planet does where it stands in your chart
- The combinations (yogas) your chart forms
- Your work, money, marriage, family and health, area by area
- The years ahead: whose period you are in, and what changes when
Questions
Why does my birth time matter so much?
The rising sign changes about every two hours, and with it every house in your chart. Near the edge of a sign, a few minutes can change it.
Why is my sign different from my Western star sign?
Vedic astrology measures the signs against the stars (sidereal), Western astrology against the seasons (tropical). Today the two are about 24 degrees apart, so most planets fall one sign earlier in a Vedic chart.
What are the sixteen divisional charts?
Charts drawn from your birth chart, each for one part of life: the navamsha for marriage, the dashamsha for work, and fourteen more. Your birth chart reading reads all sixteen.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. It is all worked out on your device, and nothing you type leaves it.
